A Short History of the Attorney General's Office

The first North Carolina Constitution, written in 1776, established the Office of the Attorney General. In the early 1800's, the General Assembly created the Department of Justice by statute as part of a government-wide reorganization. The people of North Carolina elect the Attorney General to a four-year term as head of the Department of Justice.
