Treatment for Meth Addicts

Getting addicted to meth is easy, and it can happen quickly. Getting off of meth is hard, and it is a long–term process. Although recovering meth addicts do not experience severe physical withdrawal symptoms, they do suffer from an inability to experience pleasure. This can last for months. Combined with the drug’s strong psychological addiction, it often leads to relapses.

The most effective treatments for methamphetamine addiction are designed to help addicts change their thinking and behavior, and increase their ability to cope with stress. Treatment that involves the entire family has proven more successful than strategies that focus on the individual addict. Support groups also appear to be helpful when used to supplement this treatment.

The MATRIX model, a method of outpatient therapy, is believed by many experts to be the most effective way to treat methamphetamine addiction. Under MATRIX, patients learn about their addiction and are trained to manage cravings and avoid risky activities that could trigger a relapse. The MATRIX method also uses family therapy, drug testing, and a 12-step process.
