Commission Overview
In order to assure the public a consistent level of competence of police officers and to promote the professional status of law enforcement officials, the Criminal Justice Standards Division administers the Commission's mandatory certification program for all sworn police officers.
The certification program has two main components: (1) minimum standards for employment, and (2) minimum standards for completion of basic training. When an employing agency documents that an applicant has successfully completed a Commission-accredited Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) course and meets the minimum employment standards, the Standards Division issues Probationary Certification which is valid for one year. The rookie officer must satisfactorily complete a probationary period of not less than 12 months. Once the probationary period is completed, the officer is issued a continuing General Certification.
